Solutions

Jim Stevenson Leads a Tour of the Springshed in 2006

Creating solutions to the problems affecting the Ichetucknee must be a “people process” that is firmly based in science and includes behavioral, political, policy and cultural changes. Why? Because everyone who uses water in Florida is simultaneously a contributor to our water problems and a potential partner in solving those problems.

The Ichetucknee Alliance is committed to working with partners in the springshed and throughout Florida to achieve our vision of a healthy, preserved and protected Ichetucknee River System.

A three-pronged approach will help us meet our goals:

  1. Accurate water models and solid, unbiased analyses of scientific findings as well as ongoing monitoring of conditions in the river system.
  2. An educated base of public supporters who understand the scientific method and are familiar with the moral and ethical principles that can guide environmental decision making.
  3. The willingness of elected representatives, state agency personnel, stakeholders and individuals to partner in good faith with others to navigate a complicated maze of relationships in order to find creative and effective solutions.

Solutions will require us to create a new relationship with water–to change our behavior, to make some sacrifices, and to agree that we all must use less water and try to stop pollution at its sources.
